Sweet, looks like I finally have something in the Canberra category, and what an awesome show for the first one!
The National Gallery is no stranger to its understanding and collecting of street and urban art – they got on the bandwagon a long time ago, well before all of this stuff started leaking into the mainstream and they already have a growing collection of works by Australia street and urban artists amongst their archives– so its with little surprise that they continue to support it and have decided to display all of their acquisitions in one show.
Space Invaders, is a show of that commitment, and it will be displaying a huge range of their archival pieces in a full celebration of the last decade of street art.
“Drawn entirely from the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, the first Australian institution to have collected this type of work, Space invaders: australian . street . stencils . posters . paste-ups . zines . stickers surveys the past 10 years of Australian street art. Featuring 150 works by over 40 Australian artists, this exhibition celebrates the energy of street-based creativity and recognises street stencils, posters, paste-ups, zines and stickers as comprising a recent chapter in the development of Australian prints and drawings.”
If you’re in the ACT, this is a no-brainer. If you’re in Sydney or Melbourne, this is more than worth a road trip!
The Everfresh crew along with a bunch of others, including Vexta, Nails, Ghostpatrol, Miso, Nails and Twoone (to only name a few) are also part of a live event for the opening of the show on the Saturday the 30th under the “This is a stick up” – theres more details on this and a schedule of stuff including live art, book signings and a talk by Jaklyn Babington, the curator of the exhibition, on their website.
