Okay, we’re as excited about this one as we were about last years Audrey Kawasaki show, also at Outré, because Sylvia Ji is, hands down, one of our favourite international artists – and she’s bringing a bunch of original work, (paintings and prints), down here to Oz at the end of the month!
“If a dramatic girl with with Mexican Day of the Dead make up has recently caught your eye, it’s likely you’ve been taken in by the spell of American artist Sylvia Ji.
And Outré Gallery has just made the snap announcement that this artist with a super cult following is having a surprise Pop Up exhibition at the end of June.
The mystery of Día de los Muertos, the Otherness of femininity, the myths of beauty and a dark latent sexual energy are brought forth in rich colours and dramatic decoration. Her imagery of flowing hair, women in ecstasy, symbolic use of flowers and painterly darkness all create a rich world where desire and death sit very close. Her women are equally enchanting and bewitching. Powerful, mysterious and down right sexy.
Sylvia will be in Melbourne for the opening of this exciting event. This is a rare chance to see her original paintings outside of America.”
So damn excited.
