What with Futurama going 8-bit in its finale, and there being all kinds of 8bit wonder shows overseas, its a pleasure to see another show focusing on this much loved 80s format in the shape of Emulator. Not just an art exhibition, this is a celebration of classic gaming with a whole bunch of creative events around it, perfect for those gen-xers to look back on, and for the gen-z (wtf gen are we up to now, anyways?) to understand the awesomeness that was 8bit.
“Emulator aims to celebrate the importance that classic gaming has brought to a generation of gamers. The event will also look to promote the gaming industry in South East Queensland as well as connecting these developers to the gaming public. This year we will be celebrating the arcade games of 1978 – 1986.
The events proposed for Emulator include:
- An art exhibition that allows emerging artists from around Australia to pay homage to 8-bit game inspired art. This event will promote emerging artists from throughout Australia. Opening night will also include 8 bit inspired live music!
- Industry nights: These nights will enable the local games industry and gaming community to meet through industry networking nights.
- Classic Arcade Retrospective: We will be showcasing a number of classic titles both in table-top and stand up cabinets. The best part of all, these machines will be 100% playable!
- Arcade Challenge Nights: We will be hosting a series of Brisbane’s first “Old School Arcade Battles” in different catergories. This will be a great opportunity to bring gaming back to a social environment. Sure, you can sit at any computer or console at home and challenge people to a game… but we are bringing it back to face to face combat!
- Emulator Arcade Trophies: In addition to the above we will also host a live leaderboard… keep the highest score on a machine until 30th September – win some great prizes and a trophy as well!
- Local Indie Game Developers Showcase: Highlighting games in development and future releases by the smallest game designers to major studios will be the key to this event.”
Elite, Golden Ax, Gyrus and R-type were major favourites back in the day, alas none of those make an appearance, but Donkey Kong, Frogger Galaga and many more do! Woot!
