Exhibition – Etcc #3 – Melbourne

Rancho Notorious, Melbourne, is hosting some really cool shit lately!
This weekend, ‘Etcc’ hits Melbourne for its third round, and its a whopper of an idea. Political, poignant, pleasing to the eye the “remixed and remixable” works in the exhibition highlight and delve deep into some of the sensitive and tricky areas of art, marketing, design and law.

Artists at the semi-permanent show include Beci Orpin, Bec Winnel, Benjamin Reeve, Bridge Stehli, Drew Funk, Flew, Jimmy Bligs, Lee-Ann Trewartha, Leif Podhajsky, Louis Kanzo, Madeleine Stulgis, Meeri Anneli, Michael Steele, Nate Trapnell, Racket, Ralf Kempken, Rena Littleson, and Two-One.

“…Featuring a body of new works that explore the realities of copyright in the visual arts. By hanging the polarized copyright debate on the gallery wall the works challenge piracy, appropriation, inspiration, legal licensing and the freedom to create.

Each artist will take Creative Commons licensed images, create a new work based on those images, and in turn license their image for others to remix–legally. Through this process, the project utilizes emerging copyright practices to demonstrate new models of distribution, collaboration and commerce. Appropriation. Rip offs. Sharing. Remix. Collaboration. Piracy. Due credit.

The environment that artists operate in now is both liberating and litigious. The copyright debate is drab and polarised, and of little relevance to many artists’ creative practice. However, this does not mean that it does not exist, for better or for worse, in the creative world. The creative community is changing. Technology is changing. The ways artists can control their respective rights are changing too. A culture is emerging to allow artists to shift, integrate and remix each others’ work; resulting in the formation of something fresh and unrestrained from the chains of traditional legal regulations.”

Whether ones opinion on remixing artwork, its a wonderful way to learn from observation and interaction. Get down and have a gander, take what you will from what you see, and you won’t be displeased!
