Snapshots – Red Bull Curates – Canvas Cooler Project – Melbourne

We’d heard about the Red Bull Canvas Cooler project from their last amazing Sydney display, and we’d had rumour from a couple of people that they were doing one down here in Melbourne – so imagine our surprise  when the event popped up totally unawares on our radar (there was little PR floating around for it, which for a RD event is strange)and that it was on last night!

We’re glad that the event was here in our hood, in China Town, at Section 8 no less (a veritable fixture of cool here in CT) – so we jaunted down Little Bourke to check it all out. There were nine coolers in all, from a variety of artists – the diversity amongst them was great, actually. Slicer, Urban Cake Lady, Phoenix, Russell Davidson, Lucy Lucy, Gerard Geer, Lazer Fist, Above and Amelia Lackman all had work in the display.

Although the coolers were self lit, the corner they were located in Section 8 was pretty dark, but, all in all, it was pretty cool and the painting/modifications of the coolers were really creative.

As we stepped outside to leave (this dude is a tad unwell today and needed the comfort of couch-time) we saw the great big new projection that adorns the wall above Section 8. Definitely an awesome setup and a perfect place to put a massive projection … but, something a little more intriguing than just random triangle images morphing into other triangles would have been great  – perhaps videos of the artists at work, or, indeed, big projections of artwork? Or err, maybe that was the art … it was, nevertheless, still kinda cool in a hypnotic way. Really looking forward to seeing Section 8s ideas it all, we’ve been needing a massive projection wall for art and sundry in the city for some time now!

The coolers themselves will be making the rounds, and eventually settle themselves into a variety of bars across Melbourne, including Section 8, Holliava, Laundry bar, New Guernica, The Vic,The Carlton, Touche Hombre, Revolver and The Liberty Social. Oh yeah, the tunes were pretty damn cool too, as always.

So, anyways! This wasn’t meant to be a ramble, but there you go, I felt like writing – Red Bull did a cool little event, and they got a bunch of artists involved to do cool shit – which is grand. For all the pics from Section 8, check them out below.
