Sojourn (noun) – a temporary stay: during his sojourn in Kuala Lumpur …
Gong Xi Fa Cai – plastered everywhere across Kuala Lumpur and the reason for my week long visit to the city. I’d left Singapore after only a two day stay to head over to Malaysia for Chinese New Year – the start of what is now a fairly epic adventure.
I’ll be posting a few of my “Sojourn” experiences now and then here on Invurt, in addition to our regular posts, to show some of the awesome shit I’m coming across in my travel. Though we’re an Australian art blog, it’s a big world out here – and there are artists doing amazing things. It’s all too easy, having what I think is one of the best art scenes in the world, to get a little bit of tunnel vision – you have to admit, we’re pretty spoilt! Anyways, I hope you all find some of this interesting – it’s certainly proving so for me …

In my time in KL, I ate, put up a few stickers here and there, then ate again. Then I ate some more. Then I managed, somehow, to eat even more. Malaysians definitely have an eating problem – but I don’t blame them, the food is so damn good. Needless to say, my gweilo stomach suffered the consequences of unfettered eating – everything that passed my eyes, I ate, fearlessly. Fuck it was delicious, but, errr, the following five days after my visit – not so good. Doh.
Given the aforementioned eating, I didn’t really have a lot of time to check out much in the way of Kuala Lumpur street art – which is a shame, because hidden amongst the chaos of a rambling city of awesome culinary dispatches, I could sense that the undercurrents of a vibrant scene flowed throughout the metropolis.
The best stuff I saw was down near the River Klang, right between the Pasar Seni LRT station and the Central Market – a large urban canvas spread across the riverbank. I did catch a glimpse of a few other spaces, some stencils and some familiar stickers across Petaling street, but I really do wish I had of had more time to fully explore … hopefully next time – and there will definitely be a next time.
In the meantime, here are a few snaps of some pretty cool Kuala Lumpur street art … and stay tuned, there’s a whole lot more to come.
