Thanks to Shane from AllThoseShapes for covering the opening of Ryan McGennisken’s latest show “She’s The Moon“. Wish I’d been able to make it down. The works look amazing, so detailed and intricate. The installation looks rad too. Check out his awesome photos from the show below.

July 9, 2015, 12:31 pmMelbourne’s so funny, seeing one artist do something and just talk shit on any one else that’s doing something in a similar way. Acorn’s one artist of a million drawing like this. What about Abdelkader Benchamma or Kymia Nawabi or Virgil Finlay or the 73 year old Phillippe Caza? Not taking anything away from Acorn’s work but he’s certainly not an original. Nor is this work of Ryan’s. I met Ryan awhile back and he’s such a quiet and humble guy, he’d just returned from a residency in Finland at the time and we talked about his influences and where these ideas came from and artists who work similar to this. He most definitely wasn’t pretending that he was the original guy. In fact, he spoke a lot about Phillippe Caza.
REPLYI really think there’s a problem in Melbourne in particular with people believing that they are the only ones working in a particular way. Some people get well known, then anything that comes out even slightly similar gets ridiculed and has the tag “ripping off” attached to it, ESPECIALLY in the drawing scene. I could sit here all day making comparisons between artists who work almost the exact same but it’s so pointless when you do get out of the Melbourne bubble and realise that no matter how original you THINK you are, there’s always, ALWAYS going to be someone doing something similar or in most cases, the same and probably before you.
