After moving to Penang from Lithuania some three years ago, artist Ernest Zacharevic has made a home for himself surrounded by the bustle and intricacies of the city – and, of course, creating some damn fine artwork.
Based in George Town, putting up his site specific, well thought out and executed works, Zach has made at least a few waves with his work across Malaysia already, not just for his gorgeous murals, but also, most recently, with a bit of a furore down in Johor with an image that depicted a lego man with a knife (possibly commenting on the dangers to be found in the city – but, really, aren’t these things subjective?).
It was a pretty cool piece imho. Sure, I’ve heard of some of the dodge in Johor from my friends, but then again, what city doesn’t have its general dodgy-ness? (King St in Melbourne, I’m looking at you) The piece would have worked really well anywhere – I think it was all a bit blown out of proportion, personally.
Regardless of all the media bullshit, which I’m sure he fkn hates, Zacharevic is one talented guy – so when I saw that he was holding his first solo show in Penang the other day, well, damn straight we’re going to tell you about it all.
News on his upcoming solo show is fairly slim, but with the title “Art Is Rubbish” we can probably make a few suppositions – that it will, at some level, take the form of a nicely critical group of work – after all, this artist definitely has something to say.
Head down to this Friday night to check it out for yourselves!
