Event – Melbourne Art Fair – Art in the Street (Panel Discussion) – Royal Exhibition Building – Melbourne

As part of the 2014 Melbourne Art Fair, good friend of Invurt Alison Young, Professor, Social and Political Sciences, Melbourne University, joins Alex McCulloch, Director, Alex McCulloch Art, Rone, Street Artist and Jacqueline Milner, Sydney Senior Lecturer, Theoretical Enquiry, University of Sydney to discuss Art in the Street. The panel will discuss the impact of street art on the urban environment and the evolution of street art over the last decade or so. I’m looking forward to this discussion, hopefully we’ll see you there. This Saturday!!!

From the Melbourne Art Fair website: “The theme of this panel is ‘Art in the Street’. In particular, we will focus on the ways in which street art takes art into the urban environment and in which the practice of art has assumed a wide variety of new forms, and the modes of public interaction have expanded. Street art is often described as the largest ever art movement, a claim that is sometimes based on the estimated number of people practising as street artists and sometimes on the worldwide popularity that street art is enjoying. And as it becomes more popular and more marketable, street art can increasingly be found in the gallery, the museum and the auction house, as well as in the street. But when street art moves indoors, is it still street art? As a market develops for street art, does it lose its popular roots? Is there something about street art that makes it different from other forms of contemporary art, or from graphic design? What’s the future for this popular form of art in public space?”
