Our good mate Nick Millen from the very diverse gallery that is The House Of Bricks is having a show on the Gold Coast on the 30th of Jan, Nick is also having a preview of his works at The House Of Bricks, this Saturday night from 4pm – 8pm.
Using chalk, black & white acrylic and wood, Millen has created a series of painted objects. The paintings are diverse and range in their subject matter. The works are expressions of brightness, chaos and raw energy brought into order by the application of hand built frames.
“The works began with a continued passion for using chalk. I love how chalk is affordable, bright and versatile. It can be used in so many different ways & after considering how conceptually blown out painting had become; it felt right to work with a medium that was humble, playful & basic.
‘Everything is cut by hand. No power tools are used. I wanted to keep things basic & bring an individual intimacy to each piece whilst still creating a cohesive body of works. It appears to me that design aesthetics have crept in to art quite heavily and there is an expectation for artworks to carry a certain perfection & cleanliness in their execution. For the basics series, I have attempted to create works of beauty that still hold a natural roughness. No work is too similar to any other. Diversity in practice is essential to the works”.
This will be Nick Millen’s first solo exhibition outside of Melbourne. He has worked across theatre, film, street performance, sculpture & painting. He is currently the director of House of Bricks Gallery & former director of EGG Gallery. He has worked with hundreds of artists over the past 4 years and continues to extend his networks and offer exhibitions to budding artists.
