“I created my first ‘Totem’ design over 10 years ago, and ever since it has been a mainstay of my often varied artistic practice. Their creation is often meditative to me, and I find the process similar in some ways to that of creating mandalas. They have become many things to me over the years, a vehicle for me to form and express my ideas and creative inspirations. I wanted my first solo show to really dive in and explore how far I can push the concepts within, and in a way pay tribute to the creative flow that has pushed me continuously forward over the last decade.
‘TOTEMIA’ is a body of work combining my various influences and practices together into a cohesive body that speaks a myriad of small stories for the audience to absorb and discover.
Each individual painting is a mix of tiny inspirations, novel ideas and experimental forms that draws upon my previous experiences and aims to push the boundaries of my skills and technical knowledge. Uniting each unique work is a strong focus on symmetry and balance, from the shapes and forms to the use of vibrant hues, deep shadows and varying colour palettes.” – Skübz Mope
