Resident Photographer for Invurt and our good friend, David Russell is FINALLY having his 1st exhibition – and were super excited to share it with you.
I wrote this for his event page on Facebook:
“I first met David Russell in Hosier lane in 2012, I’d seen him a hundred times in various streets, lanes and at walls all over Melbourne before, but this time I decided to say hello. I’m glad I did. When I first met David his photography was a passion and a hobby.
Since then David has become one of Melbourne’s most renowned and respected graffiti and street art photographers, gained a strong online and social media following and become a major contributor to blogs such as Invurt and Vandalog.com, including his own website Davidrussellphotography.com.au.
David has a genuine passion for the street art and graffiti scene, not only does he spend every spare second he has documenting and capturing the art itself, he is also by far one of the most knowledgeable street art tour guides in Melbourne. As well as being a major contributor to street art blogs, David is also an integral part of many groups and initiatives such as the murals commissioned by Hosier Inc, Artists Lane in Prahran and the painting of the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre headquarters in Footscray.
When you hear David’s story, which you will at 32K, you’ll also understand that David’s relationship with street art and the streets is much deeper than just his work. Street art is a major part of David’s story and how he became who he is today.
Similar to David’s life story, 32K is the story of David’s evolution as a photographer. He’s come a long way – 32,760 hours long to be precise – since he started taking photos of street art on a crappy Motorola ‘Defy’ phone. You will see in the show David’s massive progression since he started, even since I met him only a few years ago, and how he is pushing himself and his craft every single day, experimenting with all new equipment and techniques. His most recent work, exploring the effects of light and darkness alongside the graffiti and street art is some of my favourite.
In our viral world these days, most people only appreciate David’s work for a few seconds, and mostly on a tiny screen, at 32K you will get the chance to appreciate it on an all new level, with large sized prints of his work – showcasing it in all it’s glory, the way it should be viewed.
This is going to be an awesome exhibition – I look forward to seeing you there.”
