When Invurt started up back on 2009, there were galleries everywhere. Shitload of artist run spaces, and with all kinds of spots for the more underground styles of arts to flourish – but it seems over the last two or three years, that many of these have shut up shop and disappeared. Some still hang in there, doing great things in a not so great market and doing the best for an abundance of artists – but it’s a hard thing to take on. Anyone who launches into such an endeavour these days or who is still doing the amazing work they do, has nothing but repect from my side of things.
Whats even better than tho, is when a bunch of talented people get together and start up something completely new, knowing full well the trials and tribulations that come along with doing this kind of thing these days, and go all out to open up a new space to help expose a whole bunch of people to new and emerging wonders of our Melbourne art scene.
This week, BSIDE Gallery opens up in Fitzroy, and it promises to be yet another great place to see and buy art, and maybe even spend (quite) a few Friday night openings at. Along with other recent new arrivals such as Lanes End, and our other favourites Juddy Roller and Backwoods, amongst others, well, we’re pretty blessed by all of these guys for all the hard work that they do – and we’re happy to give a warm welcome to BSIDE amongst the fray! Read in for all the news in this new space, as well as their upcoming opening this Friday night.. And enjoy some little preview pics as well, courtesy of p1xels!
“BSIDE Gallery is set to open on the 15th of July with an electrifying group show celebrating the talent and diversity within Fitzroy’s creative scenes.
The show features an incredible lineup of both emerging and established Australian artists including Ben Frost, Abyss 607, Swerfk, Hancock, Frosk, Mike Eleven, Gigi, Goodie, Aaaron Grech, Kenz and Zamara Robison.
From street art and graffiti to fine art and installation this show will present the birth of a new era in the local arts scene: promoting an open and inclusive platform for both the artists and the audience that defies the norm of the traditional gallery setting. We want to challenge the existing paradigm and celebrate a diverse array of artistic practices and new conversations that keeps the Fitzroy art scene alive.
‘As other creative spaces are closing due to never ending tirade of developments, we want to defy the trend and reclaim artistic turf in Melbourne’s oldest suburb’ – BSIDE Gallery
BSIDE is the new generation of art spaces; young and energetic and looking to break the rules.”
Its awesome to see any new gallery opening up on Melbourne, especially when it is one that helps to focus on the kinds of artwork that we love here at Invurt – and its even grander that the team behind it is one that we have no doubt will do an amazing job at running the whole shebang!
Head down there this Friday night and check it all out!
