Exhibition – Deams – Fieldnotes – No Vacancy Project Space – Melbourne

We’ve been fans of Deams work for a very long time now, and its been incredible to see his progression over the years, and his constant experimentation with his beautiful abstract forms of graffuturism.

His upcoming solo show, “Fieldnotes” is going to be no exception to this, and even from just the small glimpses of the work from the show we can see that it will be another gorgeous display of shape, form and abstracal gradient bliss.

“Ambient landscapes dissolve into studied geological abstractions, revealing waves of movement in the stillness of a mountain. The artist wanders in a dreamlike narrative: through a moonlit panorama, recording the overlapping dimensions of his surroundings. These reductive compositions present both an inquisitive attention and poetic dialogue between macroscopic form and microscopic structure. Fieldnotes is an insight into the artist’s investigative process and findings, and an invitation to participate in the same manifold enquiry into the nature of things.

“I’m interested in the linguistic and conceptual connection between the micro and macroscopic views of the same object. Can we derive conceptual recognition from a microscopic image just through it’s patterning or from inherent characteristics such as colour and texture? How does this affect our relationship with the macroscopic view of the same object of enquiry?”

DEAMS

Painter, designer and abstract visionary Deams has been influencing the Melbourne street art scene for over a decade. A founding member of the Melbourne based painting collective AWOL Crew, his work can be found in both galleries and street contexts around the world. Deams has an intuitive approach to painting and process, which allows for his work to oscillate between tangible and intangible forms and realities. Best known for his mastery of geometric composition and adept use of vivid colours and gradients, his work is an evolving landscape of refined concepts and experiments connected by core themes. He continues to enquire deeply into the nature of human experience, metaphysics and environment.

His work has developed over time to include the presence of organic abstract forms and textures that serve to balance the rigid nature of his geometric lines. This free form abstraction has evolved to push his work further into three-dimensional space resulting in powerful images displaying an energetic tension between order and chaos. Deams approaches his practice with a studious dedication to his past and the immediacy of his present, discovering psychological links between the impressions of his childhood and his current ideas and experiences. His work continues to explore aesthetic and interpersonal relationships through compositional conversations in form and texture.

Join Deams for an artist talk at the gallery: ‘In Conversation with Deams’, Thursday, March 9th, 7-9pm.”
