*****Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and strict guidelines, sadly ROA’s exhibition wasn’t seen by many people. Backwoods Gallery did open the show but by appointment only and with very limited numbers.
You can check out this dope video put together by Byron Boman Kehoe, Michael Hurren and Trevor Holcomb showing off his amazing exhibition to get your fix.
Annihilation by ROA is coming to Backwoods Gallery this March and April.
Born in Ghent, Belgium, ROA is one of the most influential contemporary mural artists of our times. His monumental public works across the world are iconic, characterised by his distinctive black and white stylisations of endangered or extinct animals. ROA users furniture to create stunning artworks that are interactive. Like a cupboard, with an animal painted on the front, then open the door to reveal the skeleton of the animal signifying it’s endangerment.
Each canvas in Annihilation features endangered and at risk native Australian fauna using found steel objects he has scoured Melbourne for over the last month.
“ROA’s visit comes at a particularly urgent time for us in Australia. The message of his artwork is crucial as environmental decisions about the fate of our planet are made every day. His unique combination of powerful aesthetics and eloquent but understated activism offers a significant model for artists everywhere by calling attention, or calling for attention, to a world that we know – or perhaps care – all too little about.”
