Wow, what a weekend for art in Melbourne. Its a testament to both the popularity of the work coming out of here, as well as the hard work of all the artists, that several large events were able to be held on the one night with full crowds and interested fans at each. Some, like myself, with a bit of liquid assistance, managed to make it to all several events – so here’s a bit of a recap – I’m no photographer, but we did manage to capture some good ones here and there!
Warning – contains cool art, great crowds and obligatory blood spattered zombies …
Street|Studio Book Launch – No Vacancy – The Atrium – ACMI
Such an impressive turnout (as were all the events) or this book launch – so much so that we didn’t stay around for too long, the crowd was a little overwhelming haha – but we were there long enough to pick up a copy and say hello to a few peeps. So good seeing such a great amount of support for the guys and girls behind the book, and the artists work within – its a fantastic piece of art itself, one of the best I’ve picked up in a long time, and I’d recommend a copy of it for anyone’s coffee table.
More info on where to buy, more signings and info on the book in general can be found on the official Street|Studio website, or check out the interview we did with Alison Young and Miso about the book.
Sekure D – Robots > Humans Solo Exhibition Opening
This was an impressively fun show. Great artwork, amazing custom sneakers, great crowd, good music – stayed for a while and managed to check out everything at least twice, and fell in unrequited love with a painting and a pair of kicks – damn empty wallet! All round nice guy Sekure D really pulled out a few stops with this one, and I’d recommend you getting down to see it during its run at Hogan Gallery. The photos speak for themselves.
More info on the show can be found on Sekure Ds website, or the Hogan Gallery website – or check out the interview we did with him last week.
Corrosive Thoughts – At Large Gallery
The last stop for the night, several drinks down and rushing over to Northcote, was the group exhibition Corrosive Thoughts, with new works by Ryan Richter, Ben Aitken and Bradley Sheather. I love this gallery, and I particularly love checking out all the emerging and established artists who show their work here – well worth a quick tram out to Northcote to check it out.
Check out the exhibition details and more events coming up on the At Large website.
… no night would be complete, however, without the obligatory attack by zombie nurses on the tram on the way home – I made it home in one piece, but .. err … really … I didn’t mind all that much … haha.
There are more photos of all of the events, of varying quality, on our Facebook page.
All in all, just another great Friday night out in Melbourne, checking out amazing art and meeting amazing people. It still impresses me when I think about the level of support and interest for every event that night – and there is so much more coming up this month and next that we’re really excited about – and I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again – I really love this shit …
