When you look at the artists who are a part of the Higher Ground studios, you get a real feel for the diversity of modern art in Sydney. There’s no doubt that it is a hot bed of innovative thought and output, however as a private studio it isn’t that often that the public gets a glimpse into the working practices of the artists that call it home.
Thankfully, they’re not that secretive, and for the second time since their establishment, they are opening their doors to any who are interested in checking it out.
“As part of the Leichhardt Open Studio Trail, Higher Ground Studio will be opening its door to the public for one day only. You are invited to come and explore the studios and view current works in progress. Join us and have a chance to purchase unseen works directly from the artists.”
Open studios hold an important place in the art world, by allowing access to the workspaces it allows people to get a real, feet on the ground view of what it takes to try to make it in such a difficult industry. It also allows those who visit to purchase art directly from the artists themselves, and there’s usually deals to be had and cool things to see. Plus, proceeds of the sales go directly to the artists without the overheads of commissions – win win for all involved!
The artists at Higher Ground have, or are in the process of, making a remarkable impact on Australian art – as such, if you want to see a cross section of cutting edge art in Australia today, and you are in Sydney, you should go and check it out.
